Crescent: Update
Justin Higgins — Sun, 2005-09-11 23:48
I have went around and got alot of info on this project. The actual memorial design, which includes a large tower with chimes, and a beautiful approach is overall very lovely. What worries me however, is the large crescent of trees, which turn red in the fall (around the time of Sept. 11), and the small grove which make up a spot near the crescent. Whether intentionally or not, these trees make up the image of the Islamic Crescent, and the small grove of trees can be interpreted as the star. Due to this coincidence (and I am hoping this was merely a coincidence), I believe the crescent should not be part of this memorial. The memorial still needs approval from the Secretary of the Interior, so hope is not lost. Here is the proposed Crescent design as compared to the Flag of Tunisia, which contains the Islamic crescent and star.

As you can see, the resemblance is too close to be allowed. I do not want to be a conspiracy theorist and say this was on purpose, but even if this coincidental, it should not be allowed. For more info and how to get involved read- THE CRESCENT OF IGNORANCE
We have now learned that this design must be approved by the Secretary of the Interior and the National Parks Service. We urge you to send them your disapproval of this project.

You can also click the link above to fill out a comment form. The Secretary of the Interior is Gale Norton. The National Parks Service is under the DOI, and is under NPS director Fran Mainella. We are unable to find a way to e-mail the NPS directly. The only resource it offers is the ability to email specific parks, which won't help in this situation. This is a developing issue.
