Giulani's Civil Union Flop

I'm against civil unions. It's been an interesting internal debate with me on whether or not to support civil unions, because I was looking at whether or not the government should have a stake in marriage-type decisions. I've also been against gay marriage. After some personal waffeling, I thought about the legal ramifications of civil unions (like gay adoption), and made my decision. I sit in the same camp as Rudy Giuliani does on this issue apparently.
In a startling departure from his previously stated position on civil unions, Mayor Giuliani came out to The New York Sun yesterday evening in opposition to the civil union law just passed by the New Hampshire state Senate.
"Mayor Giuliani believes marriage is between one man and one woman. Domestic partnerships are the appropriate way to ensure that people are treated fairly," the Giuliani campaign said in a written response to a question from the Sun. "In this specific case the law states same sex civil unions are the equivalent of marriage and recognizes same sex unions from outside states. This goes too far and Mayor Giuliani does not support it."
Essentially, Giuliani is trying to look more conservative. I like the fact that Giuliani is trying to bring the Republican base to his side by being more conservative, but I wonder if he'll legislate with his old world view or his new world view. He kind of differs from Romney in my mind in the fact that Romney evolved into a Conservative, and Giuliani just kind of fell into conservatism while he was busy falling into the 2008 elections. This is one "flip-flop" I can live with.

If you're a Conservative
If you're a Conservative with Liberal values, Giuliani is a viable candidate. However, for truly conservative Conservatives, his value as a leader can be safely dismissed out of hand. What we need is another Reagan, perhaps with an even stronger sense of Nationalism and strong convictions about good and evil, so we can all be unified equally in our love of nation and hate of evil.
