Discussion: Open Minds
- Posted by Justin Higgins on June 16th, 2007 in
I am often confused when Conservatives are painted as close-minded. I have a very open mind, but that doesn't mean I'm tolerant of things that I believe are incorrect, morally reprehensible, or illogical. What does it mean to have an open mind, which party is more open minded, and is that a good or a bad thing? Discuss.

Don't play the martyr
-'liberals' are painted as close-minded too. It is not a charge that is unique to 'conservatives'. I hate all this sides shit and labels. War is morally reprehensible. Tax cuts that favor a very, very small minority of the population are illogical. And thinking there's a whole race of people who want to destroy us merely because we are free is incorrect. These are things that I'm sure some 'liberals' find wrong and some 'conservatives' might agree with. Uncle George is right about your bookshelf. And I'm sure I could guess half of the titles on your shelf just by looking at one of the reader lists married to an Anne Coulter book on amazon.com.

Conservative in name only- the first writer is obviously a looney lib. So open minded that their brains have fallen out. No moral compass. Needle is just spinning around on the dial. Ron Paul, what a joke, never did trust folks with two first names.
If you're not tolerant of
If you're not tolerant of things you believe are incorrect, then, by defination, you're not tolerant! So you only tolerate ideas you believe in?
That makes you and every human being in history, I think.
Hysterical.
I look towards none other than Mr. Ron Paul and the response he has been given for proposing different solutions than the base wants to hear. The GOP has been marketed as being this big tent but, in reality, is anything but. Look towards the conservative bloggers who DEMANDED that this man be kicked out of the debates for not having the same ideas as everyone else!
(Which begs the question: why even bother with the debates?)
To be open minded means to hear someone else's ideas before making a judgement and tearing them to shreds. You've demonstrated for years now a refusal to do this. Whether a movie or book, you read someone else's opinion on it and therefore you hate it too. Without ever seeing it for yourself! You know if you like something before you have even seen it. I'm sure you hate Sicko and it's not even out yet. Make sure you read up on other people's reviews so you can form your opinion that way!
If you were truly were open minded you would be reading blogs from opposing view points. You wouldn't try to stamp everyone who disagrees with this war as "unamerican" as a way of trying to silence them. You're book shelf would be full of authors with wildly differing viewpoints (and no, that one from an unfunny ex-SNL writer doesnt count).
Conservatives come in all stripes, it's just the ones who do all the blogs and radio shows tend to be the biggest blow-hards and cast a bad light on the people who just want less government and lower taxes.
So, no, not all conservatives are close minded but you, most certainly, are.
