The 9/11 Remembrance Movement

From time to time a get an e-mail on the subject. It's been an issue of debate between me and several teens I talk to routinely about politics. Most recently, it's been the subject of a chain of MySpace bulletins. Should 9/11 become a holiday? Should schools cancel, banks close, and ceremonies ensue?
Let's break it down. Half the kids sending me the MySpace bulletins want another day off of school. As of now, September 11th, in school, is marked by a video or two talking about the historial significance of the event. I then look back to the patriotic displays in the days after September 11th, and I would take those over the video tributes in a second. The key is, 9/11 should only be a holiday if we're going to observe the holiday properly. Not just a day off school, but a day where we would bring the flags back out, look at America's greatness, and celebrate the victories we're achieving over Islamofascism.
There is a very beautiful War on Terror memorial just miles from where I live. If September 11th was a holiday, I would love to see visitors filtering through the memorial all day, seeing the names of those lost thus far in the fight for freedom. I'd like to see tributes on the t.v. that actually show us coverage from the day. We need to remember, no matter what the psychiatrists say. Let's open this debate.
Should September 11th be a Holiday Like Memorial Day?

Speaking of the devil...
Hot off the press from:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/02/02/health/main1276366.shtml
'...In an 83-page decision, Batts noted that the EPA and Whitman said shortly after the attack brought down the 110-story twin towers that the air in and around the area was safe to breathe.
In a Sept. 13, 2001, press release, the EPA said the air around the disaster site was relatively safe and that short-term, low-level exposure of the kind produced there "is unlikely to cause significant health effects..."'
I guess 'in and around' would include the pile.
All of the statements...
...that I've yet to see that include Kristina Todd Whitman and her various briefings, all included "on the pile things are different" disclaimers.
er---
What about the EPA coming out and saying conditions were safe overall? I might be misremembering this, but I'm pretty sure they made a blanket statement due to alleged administration pressure.
There were...
...numerous health warnings that condition on the pile were not safe and different than conditions in the rest of Manhatten. They only said it was safe to breathe in New York, not on the pile itself.
They do deserve total health care though.
Let's start with--
-Making sure the volunteer heroes of 911 have total health care for their illnesses, an apology from the EPA for saying post-911 conditions were safe to breathe in and the rescue workers get integrated communications systems.
Nobody is going to forget 911 and us being victims that day, so don't worry man.
9/11 - day of solemn rememberance
Yes, 9/11 should be a holiday - but I agree, it should be observed properly as a day of solemn remembrance.
Federal Holidays
Here are a list of all Federal holidays for 2007:
http://www.usps.com/communications/newsroom/calendar/federalholidays.htm
We can consider our 9/11 losses on May 28 (Memorial Day). You don't see any December 7 on this list. Why add 9/11?
To me, the best thing we can do for our fallen, is to carry on, overcome, and prevail. Adding a holiday for every time people die is like lowering the flag to half staff every time a soldier dies in Iraq or Afghanistan - which is another thing that pisses me off. America is a nation of victory and perseverance, not eternal mourning. This half staff thing is ridiculous and so is having a holiday for 9/11.
Our fallen, I am sure, would rather see our flag fly high in triumph, and our nation carry on in utter defiance of the enemy that wishes to cripple us with fear and mourning.
NEVER. No flags at half staff and no "holiday" on 9/11.
Taking It Another Way
What about celebrating the heroes of 9/11, such as the folks on flight 93 and the firefighters and the policemen. Celebrating us rising from the ashes?
9/11 Holiday
Yes, September 11th should be a "holiday" as in December 7th but not as in Memorial Day. Death and destruction is nothing to celebrate. But it is something to remember. For if we fail to remember we are doomed to repeat it.
