Democrats Trample on Democracy in Congress
Justin Higgins — Fri, 2007-08-03 17:40
Unbelievable. Facing a 215-213 victory in the House for the Republicans, Democrat leadership called it a 214-214 tie and threw the vote out the window. This is an unprecedented trampling of Democracy, and there's absolutely nothing being done about it. CBS calls it chaos:
The rancor erupted shortly before 11 p.m. as Rep. Michael R. McNulty, D-N.Y., gaveled close the vote on a standard procedural measure with the outcome still in doubt.
Details remain fuzzy, but numerous Republicans argued afterward that they had secured a 215-213 win on their motion to bar undocumented immigrants from receiving any federal funds apportioned in the agricultural spending bill for employment or rental assistance. Democrats, however, argued the measure was deadlocked at 214-214 and failed, members and aides on both sides of the aisle said afterward.
One GOP aide saw McNulty gavel the vote to a close after receiving a signal from his leaders – but before reading the official tally. And votes continued to shift even after he closed the roll call - a strange development in itself.
A key thing to remember is that details remain fuzzy, but there's a lot more to this case. An example is, the vote was removed from the record, and neither the Republican win OR the tie stood:
When Democrats finally moved to consider the spending bill as the last vote of the night, furious Republicans left the chamber en masse to protest the maneuver. The House eventually recessed at 11:18 p.m. But Republicans quickly discovered that there was no longer any record of the controversial vote and immediately charged Democrats with erasing the bad result.
“Obviously, the Democrats don’t want to stand up against illegal immigration – so much so that they’re willing to cheat in order to win a vote,” Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., said in an e-mail. “They’re desperate – and it shows.”
The official House website did not show a record of the vote as of 1 a.m. Friday.
This is a lot bigger than a simple illegal immigration vote. Democrats destroyed the fabric of Democracy in the House, and simply erased a vote that didn't go their way. I have no clue how they intend to spin a complete breach of the American people's trust. From House Minority Leader John Boehner:
“A majority of the House last night voted to pass this Republican proposal, which deals with an issue of great importance to American taxpayers. But the Democratic leadership, which wanted a different outcome, overruled the vote and declared that the motion had actually failed. In our view, this was an astonishing and unprecedented abuse of power, defying the will of the people and trampling on the very fabric of American freedom and democracy.
NixGuy has video. This is an issue that needs play amongst the blogosphere and in the media. This comes as President Bush is ready to force the Congress to stay in session, and as Congress's approval rating hits a ridiculous low. The American people have unbelievably low trust in the President to handle this war, and unbelievably lower trust in our new Democrat Congress. Democracy in the House is being stabbed in the back by Speaker Pelosi and her minions.

In Their Shoes
Allan Strickland — Tue, 2007-08-07 22:42If you want to follow the currents of history, let's go back in time, shall we? How about...1975, and the US pull-out from Vietnam, the LAST war you a55holes lost for us! What's the "Liberal body count?" How many millions were murdered with the withdrawal of US military power?
Fast forward to the present. Not that it does you any good - you're so far gone on reality - but humor me. Imagine what would happen if we pull our troops out *RIGHT NOW*? After all, this is what you're asking for (again...surprise, surprise). And you're one breath away from telling us all about how you're so focused on putting yourself in the place of the Iraqis?
Am I the only one who sees the irony in all this?
You liberals are simply deceived and on a profoundly spiritual level. The proof is in the pudding.
One minute, it's "bring the boys home!" and the next minute, it's "you stupid-fuck Conservatives can't seem to put yourself into the Iraqi people's shoes" and before all that, you admonish US not to ignore the undercurrents of history - even when those undercurrents CLEARLY warn that if we "bring the boys home" those people (the Iraqis) will be murdered by the millions?!
It's not that I'm surprised. The twisted logic of the leftists actually makes quite sense. It's merely the power to discern.
Don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out. At least when YOU leave, millions of innocent people won't die.
Troops Home Now!
Allan Strickland — Tue, 2007-08-07 20:08Approval ratings: America is saying Congress is doing a terrible job. That means EVERYBODY in Congress as a body of government. However, what we're saying here - and the point you're trying to make us miss - is that the democrats are flagrantly usurping the powers of the US Constitution and trampling the votes of other Congress members (regardless of party affiliation) with criminal intent.
Never mind what people are saying or have said about this party or that party. Take this criminal act at face value and confront that issue rather than steering the focus of thought from "Rep. Michael R. McNulty, D-N.Y., gaveled close the vote on a standard procedural measure with the outcome still in doubt" to "Republicans are saying the Democrats are doing a bad job." How can a healthy, rational mind bridge such a chasm from a matter of opinion (approval ratings) and a matter of fact (criminal intent by a Democratic Congress)?
Troops home now: I want our President to bring the troops home IMMEDIATELY. Unfortunately, the reality of the situation and the mandates of the war on terror require that the troops continue to stand guard in Iraq (because the Iraqi government isn't ready to stand on its own yet); in South Korea (because the Korean War has not yet ended - no armistice has ever been signed!); in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere.
Everybody wants the troops home and nobody wants to fight. Conservative America wants the troops home but we also know our responsibilities, and we have a job to do. We're doing it, and we're not going to stop until it's done.
Sorry Uncle G, I don't live in a chocolate pudding world where there are no far-reaching threats that span the globe. 911 taught me that. Secondly, what good are the troops here? The fighting isn't here......yet.
When a couple thousand
MK (not verified) — Sun, 2007-08-05 21:26When a couple thousand hippies and other social parasites march in the streets against Bush, the nation is divided and we need a 'new direction'. When Democrats can't get a vote in their favor, it's suddenly deadlocked. And who brays the most about vote rigging, lying, cheating sacks of crap, they are.
News Flash!
Ron Goodwyne (not verified) — Sat, 2007-08-04 15:13When the Republicans controlled Congress the dems could not control legislation. The reverse is true now. The lowest ever approval rating for Congress is directly attributable to the Democrat leadership. Republicans cannot push legislation or do much of anything. The Democrats have so far squandered their conrtol by doing virtually nothing except try to pull us out of Iraq and investigate Bush. If you think that's what Congress should be doing, great! But apparently most Americans would like to see them actually tackle some issues that affect the rest of us.
I like how when the
Uncle G (not verified) — Sat, 2007-08-04 03:13I like how when the Republican controlled congress had a horrid approval rating all of the Dems said it was a low approval for the Republican controlled congress. And now all the right wingers are saying the low approval ratings are for the Democratic controlled Congress as if it's Americans saying they specifically dislike ONLY the job the Dems are doing. News flash: Americans dislike what BOTH of our corporate parties are doing. That's what those numbers mean: they arent doing the will of the American people. But I guess that doesnt play well to the right wingers that frequent this site, eh?
The American people want our troops home NOW. The Dems made all sorts of promises that they knew they couldn't keep to win the election. Big stunner there! They dont have the numbers to do what they said they would do, not to mention all the back peddling on all that reform legislation they promised.
Are you...
Justin Higgins — Sat, 2007-08-04 00:41Are you referring to a veto? I'm not quite sure what you're saying here.
Im no fan of the democrats
Fuzz — Sat, 2007-08-04 00:23Im no fan of the democrats at all, in fact they are a scourge, but answer me this, Justin...
How is this any different than a law being passed by the House and Bush adding a signing statement stating he does not have to completely obey the legislation just passed by a vote of elected representatives?
Just curious, that is all.
Keep up the good work on your site.

Douglas V. Gibbs (not verified) — Fri, 2007-08-03 18:08Remember, the Dems always do this. Even when Bush defeated Gore they were claiming that the defeat never happened.
