ROTR Comment Policy Redux
- Posted by Justin Higgins on September 19th, 2007 in
I'd like to address some concerns about how my comments section operates, how I choose to police this site, and the overall goals of open registration here on ROTR. First thing's first, here are the overall goals of this site:
#1- An Outlet for Me, My Opinions, and Invited Guests
The main goal of this site is to get my opinions, my thoughts, and news that I deem important to the general public and those interested in reading the things I find interesting. A lot of people choose to get their news and commentary through certain filters, including myself. Wading through the thousands upon thousands of stories, from national news events to grassroots events like the Gathering of Eagles, is a difficult and time-consuming job. Some people like reading what others have to say. This site is my outlet over anything else.
#2- A Portal to the Blogosphere
I link a lot, and I consider my site a portal to other high-quality blogs that also have a good pulse on the news and events of our time. Aside from getting readers to know me and my thoughts, I have a goal in mind of introducing readers to other strong Conservative bloggers. I'd consider myself a pundit first, and a linker second. That being said, it's still high up on my list.
#3- A Free and Open Discussion Forum
It's perhaps the most underused feature of my site. My comments section is NOT the free and open discussion forum I'm talking about. There is an actual forum feature on my site, and I pledge that I will not remove anything from that forum that is simply criticial of me. Absolutely insane threads and profanity-laced diatribes, etc. may be removed, but as a whole, the forum is where you can complain and be a far-left whackjob. That's what it's designed for.
#4- A Comments Section to Inspire Insightful Dialogue
I love comments, but still note that the comments section ranks #4 on this list. I consider my comments section a benevolent dictatorship. I can choose to remove, edit, or completely change any and all comments when I see fit. If you're criticizing me and I feel that I've addressed the issue you're criticizing, the comment will be removed. Up until now I've been lax in permanently banning folks that choose to repost comments I've removed, but I will not hesitate to close registration and make my comments section a priveledge, and not a right. If you want to make a point about something I wrote, move to the forums. My comments section is for folks that I believe have real debate, not people who read my site for the sole purpose of discrediting any and all points I make.
Some have chosen to continuously repost in my comments section as a means to promote their own liberal websites, many of them having no real content. These folks run sites with "attacking" as their primary purpose. You're not going to leach my readership by advertising here, so don't waste your time.
All of this being said, I will continue to implement the same policies I have been implementing for over two years now. If you write "Justin Higgins sucks" and I choose to change your comment to "I'm a big fat asshole," too bad. If you feel that that's wrong, write about it in the forums. Choose to do it in the comments? Congratulations, I'll just lock things down. I'm in charge.

Yeah-
If I had a site, I know you would be linking to it. I may not be as cute as Michelle Malkin, but I make more sense!
At least, in my own mind I make more sense.
But anyone who puts a label on themselves, be it conservative, liberal, whatever, they are limiting themselves to some extent. There's a taint to the other side and undue credibility given to those of the same stripe.
And good job channeling Alexander Haig in your post.
'I am in control here'
I'm not Saying
I'm not saying I'm trying to get people to think narrow-mindedly, I'm just saying I like introducing readers to those I believe make intelligent points on behalf of Conservatism. I occasionally link across the aisle and even moreso link to independents and libertarians. Some folks are not worth linking to however, like the Kossacks and some commenters here.
Justin shakes his medium-sized mits in the air!
Dude, if it wasn't for the comments section, this liberal moonshit retard wouldn't be here.
It is your site, and you can obviously do as you like. I, for one, would like to see more discussion on here, as well as more porn.
"Aside from getting readers to know me and my thoughts, I have a goal in mind of introducing readers to other strong Conservative bloggers"
You'd be shocked to find that there's lots of stuff worth reading and linking to in other places. There's writers and bloggers who get linked on, say Counterpunch, who actually dovetail nicely with conservative concerns such as illicit corporate-ordained government spending, the rediculousness of the trendy concerns of Hollywood elites and criticizing democrats like Dame Hillary and Barak O'Imblacka. Its a big world out there, and once in awhile there's stuff reading outside of the echo chamber.
