Medical Mishap of the Day

Justin Higgins — Sun, 2007-09-23 22:31

What type of brilliant medical discoveries are happening in Venezuela, the home of Castro's newest apprentice? Surely the home of Socialist Dictator Hugo Chavez is going to be way ahead of the game on this front. They're doing so well that people are waking from the dead...

CARACAS (Reuters) - A Venezuelan man who had been declared dead woke up in the morgue in excruciating pain after medical examiners began their autopsy.

Carlos Camejo, 33, was declared dead after a highway accident and taken to the morgue, where examiners began an autopsy only to realize something was amiss when he started bleeding. They quickly sought to stitch up the incision on his face.

"I woke up because the pain was unbearable," Camejo said, according to a report on Friday in leading local newspaper El Universal.

His grieving wife turned up at the morgue to identify her husband's body only to find him moved into a corridor -- and alive.

Reuters could not immediately reach hospital officials to confirm the events. But Camejo showed the newspaper his facial scar and a document ordering the autopsy.

These type of amazing medical discoveries just make me giddy in anticipation of Hillarycare, or Cuba of the North healthcare. Ok, sure, I'm sure someone is going to have an example of this happening in the U.S., but it's too funny to pass up.

International Survey: U.S. Leads in Medical Errors

socketplug — Mon, 2007-09-24 13:13

Citing individual cases like this does not mean much and does not help the universal health care debate.

For a broader perspective on the American health care industry as a whole and compared to other industrialized nations please see this 2005 study by the Common Wealth Fund.

This August 2007 Times editorial does a good job of summarizing the current health care system.

It would appear that the American health care system is in need of a pretty significant overhaul especially when compared to other nations that manage to (overall) do a better job of covering their entire citizenry for less.

Here are some quotes from the Times article:

All other major industrialized nations provide universal health coverage, and most of them have comprehensive benefit packages with no cost-sharing by the patients. The United States, to its shame, has some 45 million people without health insurance and many more millions who have poor coverage. Although the president has blithely said that these people can always get treatment in an emergency room, many studies have shown that people without insurance postpone treatment until a minor illness becomes worse, harming their own health and imposing greater costs.
...
The United States ranks dead last on almost all measures of equity because we have the greatest disparity in the quality of care given to richer and poorer citizens. Americans with below-average incomes are much less likely than their counterparts in other industrialized nations to see a doctor when sick, to fill prescriptions or to get needed tests and follow-up care.
...
We have known for years that America has a high infant mortality rate, so it is no surprise that we rank last among 23 nations by that yardstick. But the problem is much broader. We rank near the bottom in healthy life expectancy at age 60, and 15th among 19 countries in deaths from a wide range of illnesses that would not have been fatal if treated with timely and effective care.
...
But we scored poorly in coordinating the care of chronically ill patients, in protecting the safety of patients, and in meeting their needs and preferences, which drove our overall quality rating down to last place. American doctors and hospitals kill patients through surgical and medical mistakes more often than their counterparts in other industrialized nations.
