Yet Another Huckabee Video

Am I completely wrong for not thinking the following video is offending? Huckabee is a Baptist minister, and he's a devout Christian. It's not uncommon for Christians to thank God when good things happen in their lives, it's just not. Here's the video that some are angry about:

Isn't there-

-a quote somewhere, maybe it is in the Old Testament about how women who straighten their hair to appear attractive to a man should be stoned.

And isn't there one about how shellfish shouldn't be eaten?

Do you really think some of these people will take issue with the 'Timothy' quote?

Bible Quotes

Just because I don't believe in God doesn't mean I don't read the Bible. Below are some quotes that I've found that I find interesting (but don't seem to be used any more for some reason). (All quotes are from the New International Version.)

Sexism

1 Timothy 2
11A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent.

Titus 2
3Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. 4Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, 5to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.

Slavery

1 Timothy 6
1All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God's name and our teaching may not be slandered. 2Those who have believing masters are not to show less respect for them because they are brothers. Instead, they are to serve them even better, because those who benefit from their service are believers, and dear to them. These are the things you are to teach and urge on them.

Titus 2
9Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, 10and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.

Economics
Deuteronomy 23
19Do not charge your brother interest, whether on money or food or anything else that may earn interest. 20You may charge a foreigner interest, but not a brother Israelite, so that the LORD your God may bless you in everything you put your hand to in the land you are entering to possess.

Leviticus 25
35"'If one of your countrymen becomes poor and is unable to support himself among you, help him as you would an alien or a temporary resident, so he can continue to live among you. 36Do not take interest of any kind from him, but fear your God, so that your countryman may continue to live among you. 37You must not lend him money at interest or sell him food at a profit.'"

Re: Jug of Poison

Allan,

if I were God, I wouldn't answer your prayers

I don't pray, so even if there was a god (or gods), it would have nothing to answer. The videos I posted were to help those who do pray understand why some prayers seem to be answered while others are not. If anybody were to pray to a jug of milk, some of the prayers will be answered and some not. But the jug of milk did not answer them. They were "answered" because of coincidence and those that were not answered were because jugs of milk can't do anything.

But Allan, if I were to pray, which god should I pray to? Below is another video with a short list of gods human beings have created over the millennia. What criteria should I use to pick the god or gods? And once I've chosen a god or gods to worship how do I know the choice is correct?

Jug of Poison

socketplug, if I were God, I wouldn't answer your prayers, either. Discussions like this always remind me of the movie line from Pilate's wife in the Mel Gibson movie, "The Passion of the Christ." Pilate asks her, "the truth! What is the truth?" His wife responds, "if you will not hear the truth, no one can tell you."

And in Romans,

Rom 11:8 as it is written: "God gave them a spirit of stupor,
eyes so that they could not see
and ears so that they could not hear, to this very day."

Therefore, it is pointless to pray to your jug of milk or to your lucky horseshoe. It perpetuates stupid and worthless arguments with people who can not understand and are therefore not at liberty to accept, understand, or benefit in any way from the gospel of Jesus. For those of us who have understanding, there is this (also in Romans):

Rom 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?
Rom 8:36 As it is written: "For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered."
Rom 8:37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
Rom 8:38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,
Rom 8:39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Therefore, when a believer like Huckabee sees God's work and hand in his life and publicly acknowledges this, all the milk jugs and lucky horseshoes in the world can't chasm the man's heart from our Lord. Save your breath. You can tell us (the Christian church) that the world is square all you want. We've always known better.

Lieu.......

I could ask: Why don't you change your name to theist?

I advance a viewpoint and this is supposed to be a rebuttable? If you disagree with me then please post why you disagree with me so we can have a conversation. Your post doesn't help either of us.

Yeah, you atheist!!

Shame on you, if you don't believe, you're practicing that freedom of religion that this country is allegedly based on!

socketplug.......

Why don't you change your name to atheist?

No one is saying...

That people, especially a prominant christian leader, should not be able to thanks God for the successes and blessing in his or her life. But a distinction must be made in this instance, and I hope you take this to heart, as it is not an indictment of mainline christianity or faith in general, but a criticism of MH, and him alone.

The distinction is this: A presidential election is for a secular post, and only one can win it. It would be one thing if his success didn't inherently mean the failure (since that's what losing is) of someone else. But in the election, if God is "blessing" huckabee to sin, than he is favoring him as a candidate over the others (since he can't very well help everyone to win). If I beat you at a game of chess, and I claimed that God helped me to beat you, would you not, as presumeably a christian yourself, not take offense? Would you not feel that I was implying that he also helped you lose (if nothing else, just by default, since he helped me win and favored me)?

It is perfectly fine to thank God for the blessings you have in your life, even for major successes. But if you are going to make that claim to the detriment of another person or group, don't be suprised if they get offended. And if you are going to make the claim that God is responsible for a rise in your poll #s as a candidate in an election (and thus imply that you are more or less "chosen"), then you shouldn't be suprised to not only offend many, but also become marginalized for your phenominal arrogance and presumption.

Jug of Milk

Huckabee is basically saying that God is helping him to win (or at least gain momentum). We will have to wait and see, but what happens if he loses momentum or loses the race all together? Will Huckabee then say God helped him to lose?

Also, since all the other candidates are Christian as well, this means that Huckabee is saying God is helping him and not them. This might be a little offensive to the other candidates (especially since at least some of their supporters are also probably praying for their favorite candidate to win).

The following are two videos which might help show the problem with this line of reasoning.
