Chavez Toys With Idea of War

Enter a new flurry of tags above to describe where one of the world's next war may be. Hugo Chavez is proving his radicalism by sending troops to the Colombian border, to protest the elimination of a leader of the terrorist group FARC. He's of course making it a him vs. America issue. According to FOX News, the potential conflict is expanding:

ROTR- Everyone's Favorite Socialist ThugCARACAS, Venezuela — President Hugo Chavez ordered tanks and thousands of troops on Sunday to the border with Colombia, accusing it of pushing South America to the brink of war by killing a top rebel leader on Ecuadorean soil.

Denouncing Colombia's slaying of the rebel commander in a cross-border raid into Ecuador, Chavez said Venezuela will respond militarily if Colombia violates its border. He ordered Venezuela's embassy in Bogota closed.

Ecuador's president, Rafael Correa, also ordered troops to the Colombian border, withdrew his government's ambassador from Bogota and ordered Colombia's top diplomat expelled.

FARC is a drug-trafficking, murdering terrorist group. Hugo Chavez is a democracy-despising murdering thug. It's a match made in heaven. The Colombian government is a democratically elected government with the backing of the United States. Enter the Chavez propaganda machine:

"Mr. Defense Minister, move 10 battalions to the border with Colombia for me, immediately — tank battalions. Deploy the air force," Chavez said during his weekly TV and radio program. "We don't want war, but we aren't going to permit the U.S. empire, which is the master (of Colombia) ... to come divide us."

Simply put, I believe this is all for show, but a bunch of socialist tyrants sending troops to the borders of a U.S. ally should not be taken lightly. If Chavez wants to play this game, he needs not to object when a flurry of U.S. cruise missiles come crashing into government and military facilities in and around Caracas. Have we heard anything but silence from the United Nations on this issue?

Chavez and Ecuador and Colombia

I believe this is a more balanced report of the situation that occurred in South America. Certainly it is not Chavez that is "toy[ing] with [the] idea of war".

Or for those who prefer to read, the following quotes are from this article:

In surveying US press coverage of the recent tensions between Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela, one might come to the conclusion that Colombia has become the victim of the wrath of its evil next door neighbor, Hugo Chavez. Once again, the media spin machine has been turned against Venezuela, bypassing a contextual analysis of the situation for a simplistic story line.
...
Nor is it being acknowledged that this is not the first time Ecuador has suffered the negative consequences of Colombia’s war on “narco-terrorism” as articulated through Plan Colombia. For years the northern region of Ecuador has been subject to tremendous contamination of legal crops, animals, and whole communities as a result of aerial herbicide spraying of coca crops in Colombia.
...
A quick review of responses from other countries would in fact show that the US government’s assessment is deeply flawed and out of step with international opinion. President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, proclaimed, “A situation of this nature undoubtedly warrants an explanation from Colombia to the people of Ecuador, the President of Ecuador and the rest of the region.” The governments of Paraguay, Peru, and Argentina have all released similar statements of disapproval with Colombia’s actions.

Or this article:

Colombia’s attack was a flagrant violation of Ecuador’s sovereignty. “Hot pursuit” was Colombia’s only possible defense. There is no right in international law to engage in military attacks into another country with which you are not at war if it is not an immediate continuation of an engagement that began within your borders (unless your action is explicitly authorized by the UN Security Council.) If you say that international law doesn’t matter, you’re essentially saying that Colombia has special rights to violate international law because it’s a U.S. ally. That may sell well inside the Beltway, but it’s going to sell very poorly, in general, from the Rio Grande to Tierra del Fuego.
...
According to Hillary, Colombia has “every right” to “defend itself” by violating Ecuador’s sovereignty — that’s the event — but if Venezuela sends troops to its side of the Venezuela-Colombia border — its own national territory — that’s “unwarranted and dangerous.” Hillary says that “after reviewing the situation,” she is hopeful that Ecuador will determine that its interests lie in “closer cooperation with Colombia” — the country that just flagrantly violated its sovereignty — than with Venezuela, its ally that is speaking up against the violation. She is hopeful that Ecuador will lick the hand that beats it. As president, she will work with our partners in the region and the OAS to press Venezuela to change course. Good luck with that.

Is nothing worth defending?

Regardless of whether or not Colombia is fully democratic, she is our strongest ally in Latin America. Chavez is not only spoiling to invade, but is funding the terrorist FARC, who recently purchased 50 Kg of uranium. What would they want that for? Power generators?

The question is not whether there is anyone the "neo-conservatives will not attack if given an excuse," but rather: Is there anyone that Anonymous would not surrender to?

If he invades....

If Chavez invades Colombia, than the U.S. needs to send a missile into his bedroom. Enough of this nonsense. There is an argument to be made that whatever he does in his own country is not our business - but when he starts going after our allies, who are only defending themselves against terrorist organizations, then it is very much our problem. It would not be wise to invade, but our warplanes should be more than able of taking out every major political and military target - human and building - that is needed.

The U.S. cannot allow Chavez-style socialist dictatorship to spread in South America. This is a man who can and will forge ties with other anti-American forces like Iran.

stop drinking the kool-aid

Colombia is democratic? Who are you kidding? I read from this nonsense that you want war with Venezuela too. I wonder if there is anyone you neo-conservative (read Wilsonian liberals) will not attack if given an excuse.

What we have here is a group of authoritarian fascists fighting with other authoritarian fascists over turf. It's not our fight and if we go to war, I suggest YOU lead the charge personally.

Otherwise, why don't you shut up?
